Match preview and predictions: Almeria Real Madrid

Match analysis Almeria Real Madrid

After 7 seasons in Liga 2, Almeria is finally back in the top flight thanks to its excellent season last year. The Union won the title of 2nd division champion, beating Real Valladolid on goal difference despite two last results against Alcorcon (1-1) and Leganes (2-2). Nevertheless, the Andalusians will try to honour this title and will first of all want to ensure their survival as soon as possible.

To do so, they have played six preparatory matches this summer, three victories over clubs from the lower Spanish divisions, against Velez (1-0) and San Fernando (2-3) as well as Cartagena (1-0), but also three defeats against Cordoba (1-2), Granada (3-2) and Al Hilal (2-1).

The newcomers will be in the thick of things when they host the defending champions, Real Madrid. As powerful as ever on the Iberian peninsula, the White House had no real competition last year for another Spanish league title, far ahead of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

The Merengues also won their 14th Champions League title, defeating Liverpool 1-0 in the final. This summer, Carlo Ancelotti's players headed to the United States to prepare. After losing the Clasico to Barcelona (0-1), the White House made up for it against Club America (2-2) before winning again against Juventus (2-0).

Benzema team-mates also won their fifth European Super Cup title on Wednesday against Eintracht Frankfurt in a match that they dominated from start to finish despite some fine German attacks, before beginning their quest for a potential 36th league title.

The squad for Almeria Real Madrid

Having retained their backbone from last season, Almeria did not want to retain substitute goalkeeper Makaridze (Ponferradina), defenders Villar (Huesca) and Maras (Alaves), and substitute defender Daniel Carriço (ex-Sevilla, available).

Senior defenders Babic and Pozo have also been signed by Almeria, who have also brought in defender Mendes from Lorient, Brazilian defensive prospect Kaiky and striker Leo Baptistao from Santos, as well as the Alaves goalkeeper.

Almeria should be fully booked for this match

Real Madrid have also made some good moves in the mercato, luring French midfielder Tchouaméni from Monaco and strong German defender Rüdiger from Chelsea. However, the Merengues let Gareth Bale (Los Angeles FC), the disappointing Isco (free, Sevilla), striker Jovic (Fiorentina) and veteran Marcelo go. Karim Benzema, who was excellent last season in La Liga with 27 goals and 12 assists, is still the best attacking player in the team ahead of Brazilian Vinicius (17 goals, 10 assists). The Frenchman is already in fine form and proved it with a sublime goal against Club America in a friendly and in the European Super Cup.

Almeria vs Real Madrid match history

Almeria have won just one of their 12 meetings with Real Madrid, losing nine.

Real Madrid are favourites in this match but not only because of their name. After a good recruitment with the arrival of Tchouaméni and Rudiger, the Merengues have strengthened where they need it. After their victory against Frankfurt, Madrid should therefore launch their quest for a 36th league title in fine style.
